Children of Ethiopia with Noma
Jul 26th, 2010 | By | Category: Cosmetic SurgeryPeople are dying from diseases every day. Many of them could be treated if they had enough money for the treatment they need. In Ethiopia, children die of one disease or another in their first year of life. There is a disease that is relatively unheard of that is killing people every day in Ethiopia. There is a cure, but the level of people living in poverty is very high. They cannot afford to get the help they need to save their life. The disease is Noma, that only injures a person’s face. It eats away the face making the infected people unable to talk and eat. Without treatment, there is a death rate of 90%.
One surgeon decided to do everything he could to help these dying people. Mr. Le Roux Fourie took an interest in these unfortunate people. He gathered some other surgeons to help, and had already been practicing cosmetic and plastic surgery in Leeds with a successful practice offer all kinds of treatments to the rich and vein such as breast surgery, liposuction and face lifts. The group went to Ethiopia and began choosing the patients they would help. Some were already past the stage that they could be helped. There were so many to treat, it would be impossible for them to help them all. They donated their time to save these infected people from an almost certain death.
Other surgeons heard about what they were doing and decided to help. They also planned and went to Ethiopia to perform surgeries free of charge and give the people much needed medicine. Fourie’s team stayed for ten day and were only able to help 44 sick people. This is not much considering all of the people infected with Noma. In the future if surgeons keep donating their time and skill, people in Ethiopia will continue to have access to treatment. Soon they could possibly help all people suffering from Noma.
